Roadrunners Shut Down Southwestern Oregon, Start 2-0 in League

Albany – The Linn-Benton Women’s Basketball team beat Southwestern Oregon Community College 65-48 on Wednesday, January 19.

The Roadrunners improved to 10-2 on the season, and 2-0 in the NWAC South Region. The Southwestern Oregon Lakers fell to 2-7, and 0-2 in the NWAC South Region.

Linn-Benton came into the game down 3 players, including sophomore point guard Liz Chavez. “We talked about it being a complete team effort, and we weren’t able to replace those who play a lot of minutes for us. I’m really proud of how our kids dialed in yesterday at practice, and did a really good job of executing tonight,” Linn-Benton Head Coach Jerod Gibson said.

The Roadrunners came out  aggressive defensively, starting in a full-court press, which continued until the waning seconds of the fourth quarter. The Roadrunners held the Lakers to 30% shooting from the field in the first half to go along with forcing 13 turnovers. Linn-Benton went into halftime with a 29-20 lead, shooting 33% from the field.

In the second half Linn-Benton continued to stifle the Lakers defensively, forcing 6 more turnovers, finishing with 19 points off the Lakers’ 19 turnovers. Linn-benton outscored SWOCC 22-11 in the fourth quarter to seal the game.

Linn-Benton’s Brooklynn Hankwitz finished the game with a double-double, scoring 17 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

“I think our two guards Sabrina [Albee] and Maddy [Ayers] stepped up a lot and took care of the ball, and I think we worked really well out there without our three guards,” Brooklynn Hankwitz said.

Next up the Roadrunners travel to take on Clark Community College on Saturday, January 22.
