LBCC Women’s Basketball Team Ready to Resume Play

ALBANY – After a four-week hiatus in the middle of the season for the Linn-Benton Women's Basketball program, the team is excited to jump back into playing, with their league season home opener Monday, Jan. 17, against Mt.Hood Community College.

“It’s exciting to actually be able to have the opportunity to be back on the court and playing,” sophomore point guard Liz Chavez said.

Having those extra two weeks has helped the team work on the little things in their game such as boxing out, she said.

At the end of December the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) announced that they would be pushing back the start of both men’s and women’s basketball league season from January 5 to January 17. This decision from the NWAC comes in light of the new rapidly spreading COVID-19 variant around the country.

Asked how the team has been preparing for the last couple weeks, Head Coach Jerod Gibson said rebounding and not turning the ball over have been big points of emphasis in practice.

“We can’t hang our hats on being 8-2 in the preseason because league is a completely different beast,” he said. “We have to mentally and physically prepare for league.”

Coach Gibson is most excited to see how much his team can improve this year especially with being so young. The Roadrunners come into the game with a record of 8-2 and ranked No. 7 in the NWAC coaches poll. The Mt.Hood Saints are 2-6 with first year Head Coach Alex Brown at the helm. Tipoff time is 2:00 PM in the activities center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW on LBCC’s Albany campus.
